So we here at Good News! have never been the biggest Aspire fans... from the initial Aspire tanks to the redesigned bottom-vertical-coils, we've never gotten a full performance from this brand... with often-times bad, nasty flavor.
For a long time, we'd have said to pick up a Kanger Evod rather than fool with any Aspire product.
However, that changes today.
The Aspire Atlantis is built to house its 'Sub-Ohm Coils', and for those who don't know what that means, it means that Aspire have built coils that run at 0.5ohms... and anything below 1.0ohm is considered 'Sub-Ohm'.
Now, in the olden days, people said 'Sub-Ohm' with gasps and whispers... it was a subject that no one wanted to discuss; it was moonshine in the prohibition days. It seemed that only the crazies and danger-seekers wanted any part of it!
How safe is Sub-Ohm'ing? In our opinion, we haven't found anything about it that's really any different from the safety of a regular old Ego Battery... but there are things you should know.
The lower the ohm level, the more clouds of vapor that the coil will chuck out, but this lower ohm level will drain energy out of a battery faster than a normal-range coil... which means your batteries need to be high-drain, high-quality, and durable. Second, it means that your coil won't fire on any sort of Ego or MVP battery. Most of these devices are smart enough not to fire it right off the bat, but if by chance they did, it would indeed be unsafe and may cause the battery some intense heat.
That's really just about the only unsafe thing about Sub-Ohm'ing!
Virtually the only "internal battery" device that can run these things is the new sub-ohm battery that Aspire has specifically created.
But that's where the world of tube and mechanical mods come it. Even Aspire has built a tube mod too. To run this device, we suggest a high-quality 18650 battery (your local B&M should know all about these) for whatever mod you're putting this on.
You see a lot of vapers going on about how you really need a regulated mod to get the most out of the Atlantis - and not that we'd disagree. We'd like vapers to feel safe that a regulated mod has all the bells and whistles that will keep the device from firing if anything gets unsafe. There's also controlled wattage and voltage, the whole nine yards. One of the cheapest regulated mods is the new IPV Mini (around $60-$80, for up to 30watts.)
However, we asked around at our B&M's, and they said that a simple tube mod with a 18650 battery is safe (that there's truly nothing that can really happen... however, virtually everyone we talked to did warn not to use the Atlantis with a tube mode that has no connector pin.. yes, they exist... as it will turn the battery black and may blow up!) and that it runs an average of 32watts, which is really the sweet-spot for this thing anyway.
We picked up a KeCig K100+ mod for only $30, and it provided to be a great little mod. It's collapsible on the go (when the battery is removed), and it has a metal grip section that both serves a purpose (to screw upwards to make sure the 510 pin is snug against the tank's connection) and makes a great grip when you're using your pinkie to fire that mod. For $30, it was a steal!
First, we moistened the insides of the Atlantis coil, dripping a few drops of Fog Boss's Johnny No Shoes around that metal sheet, and then we screwed it on the base, filled up the tank, and let it sit a second. If you want to line up the juice holes with the internal slots that the chamber has, it only takes the slightest nudge in this way or that to line them up, no chance of leaking.
We took our first puff with the air-way all the way open (be sure to fiddle around with the air-flow valve), and since we already knew the juice, we knew what the result should be. The first puff tasted quite a bit hashy and burny, but not to an extreme... at first, we were worried. But with the second puff, that completely went away, and the sheer flavor came through.... not to mention, huge clouds.
For now, we're satisfied with a $30 tube mod, and we can save the regulated mod investment for another day. With the simple 18650 batteries, no regulation, this thing is chucking the clouds and tossing the flavor!
The flavor is crisp and clean, and rating it compared to an RDA, we'll say that through the first few refills, it's about %75 of the RDA-type flavor. After you get through a few tanks, it starts whittling down to %50 and even possibly %35, but hey, this tank goes through the ml's with each puff. You're putting this coil through more juice than a regular clearomizer would go through in a couple days!
The most amazing thing of all is simply that there's not one negative note to the flavor... these coils taste clean, crisp, and give the vapor such a pure feel. For being sub-ohm, the vapor really is fluffy and not hot... that is, if you have a low-nicotine juice. We wouldn't suggest anything higher than 12mg with this tank, and we're vaping a comfortable, smooth 6mg at the moment.
So who is this tank marketed toward, you ask? In our opinion, virtually anyone who's tired of buying coils that taste like rubber and machine oil. We're shocked by just how clean the vapor is from these coils, and that's our main focus here. They really spent some time and research on perfecting these!
To run this tank, you really could get the set-up for $100 or a tad more... $30 for a tube mod, $13 for a 18650 battery, $13 for a charger, $45 for the tank, and $20 for a truly high-quality juice (we suggest Fog Boss!) that won't ruin the coils. That's all you need! Or make it simple and get the new Aspire Sub-Ohm battery with an internal battery... even cheaper than all that!
This thing blows the clouds, packs the flavor, and performs extremely well. We truly love it, and though sub-ohm'ing was never really our first intention, it's the quality of the coils, and extra entertainment, that makes this one fine purchase.
For that, it wins a "Good News! Award"!
